Moving a piano in Dubai is not a normal furniture job, and treating it like one is the quickest way to a repair bill. A piano is a heavy wooden box with thousands of fine moving parts inside, and the damage you can’t see is the damage that costs the most. Add Dubai’s heat, small service lifts and building rules, and a piano move has more ways to go wrong than most people expect. These are the seven mistakes to avoid.
1. Sending a general crew without asking if they have moved a piano
A piano is not a sofa. It needs a proper piano dolly, strong straps, thick padding and enough people to keep it level the whole way. A crew without that kit is guessing.
Ask one direct question before you book: “Have you moved this type of piano, and what equipment will you bring?” A clear, specific answer is a good sign. “No problem, we move everything” is not an answer.
Moving a piano in Dubai is a specialist job, so ask before you book.
2. Not measuring the route first
Most problems when moving a piano in Dubai start at a door, a corner or a lift, not in the truck. Measure the piano’s height, width and depth. Then measure the narrowest point on the route, which means the front door, corridors, lift door, turns and stairs.

Service lifts in many buildings are smaller than people assume. If the piano won’t fit, the plan changes to stairs, and that means more people and a higher price. You want to find that out a week before, not on the day.
3. Letting friends or a cheap van do it
Moving a piano in Dubai with friends and a rented van is how people get hurt. A piano is heavy enough to injure people, and stairs make it worse. The bigger risk is damage you can’t see. One hard jolt can crack the soundboard or knock the action out of line, and repairs like that often run into thousands of dirhams. Saving a few hundred on the move is rarely worth it.
4. Wrapping it badly
Never put tape on the piano’s finish, because it can pull the polish off. Close and lock the lid, pad the corners, legs and pedals, and cover the whole piano in thick moving blankets. Plastic on its own traps moisture against the wood, which is why our guide to summer moving in Dubai recommends blankets first.

A grand piano is different. The legs and the pedal frame usually come off, and the piano travels on its side on a padded board. That is specialist work, so ask the mover straight out whether they do it.Good wrapping is the cheapest part of moving a piano in Dubai
5. Moving it in the heat of the day
Dubai’s heat, and the jump from hot outside to cold air conditioning inside, is hard on wood and tuning. Moving a piano in Dubai at midday, or leaving it standing outside while a lift is booked, adds risk you don’t need.
Plan the move for the morning or the evening, and keep the time outdoors as short as possible. After the move, let the piano settle in the new room. Many tuners suggest waiting a few weeks before tuning. The Piano Technicians Guild has general advice on this.
6. Forgetting the building’s rules for a heavy item
Moving a piano in Dubai buildings means dealing with the lift, the hours and the floors. A piano is the heaviest thing on your moving day, so the building will care about it. Ask management about the service lift’s weight limit, floor protection, allowed hours and booking time. If there’s no usable lift, stairs will be charged on top.
Villa communities may need a permit too, and our villa moving permit guide covers that. For a view of how lift windows control the whole day, read our guide to moving day in Dubai.
7. Putting it in the wrong spot in the new home
The last step of moving a piano in Dubai is choosing where it sits. Pick the spot before the move and tell the crew. Keep the piano away from air conditioning vents, from strong direct sun through big windows, from outside walls, and from kitchens and balcony doors. Moving a piano twice inside the same house is how floors get scratched and tuning gets thrown off again.

How Much Does Moving a Piano in Dubai Cost?
The cost of moving a piano in Dubai depends on the piano, the stairs and the distance. Guides for Dubai usually quote about AED 800 to 1,800 for a local move of an upright or baby grand. Concert grands, tight access and long distances cost more, and some guides put grand pianos at AED 1,800 to 3,500 or higher. The sources don’t agree, which tells you the same thing: the price depends on the job.
Four things move the number most:
- the type and weight of the piano
- stairs, or a lift that is too small
- the distance between the two addresses
- whether the piano has to be partly taken apart
We quote a piano after seeing photos of it and the route. Our post on moving quotes in Dubai explains how to compare quotes properly.
Can Regular Movers Handle a Piano?
Not every crew is right for moving a piano in Dubai. A trained crew with the right equipment can usually move a standard upright. A grand piano, an antique or an expensive instrument is a different level of risk, and it often needs a piano specialist.
If a company says yes to everything without asking one question about the piano, be careful. Tell us what you have and we’ll say honestly whether it’s a job for us.
If the Piano Is Part of a Bigger Move
If you’re moving a piano in Dubai as part of a villa move, say so at the quote stage. Mention it when you ask for the quote, so the crew size, truck space and route are planned around it. A piano is usually loaded so nothing heavy can lean on it. If you’re moving a whole villa, our villa movers in Dubai page explains how those moves are planned.
